Evert/Goolagong 1976 Wimbledon final
…David

Chris was the undisputed world number 1 at this stage with an  excellent record against Goolagong overall.   Nevertheless, Chris really needed to win a big match on grass against Goolagong to prove that her superiority over Goolagong transcended all surfaces including grass.

Chris did this in style.  She won the first set with some superb tennis and in the final set with the games tied at 6-6, Chris, like any true champion, shifted her game to a higher level and surprised Goolagong by coming in to the net on key points and taking the net away from her opponent.

Chris really showed how much power she could generate with her early positioning, correct stroke production, and her shoulder and hip movement.  Quite amazing considering that she was quite petite!!  The match ended with a typical deceptive Evert lob that sailed past a net crouching Evonne who was expecting a passing shot.  Game, set and match to Chris!!
