WORLD TEAM TENNIS SUMMARY, 1977
Tony Roche transfers to the Boston Lobsters, so Chris’s Phoenix Racquets are now headed by another Australian player-coach, Ross Case. Janet Newberry signs on in July to replace Kris Shaw, who has gone down with a season-ending back injury. The Racquets again lead the Western Division at season’s end, and this time they take the divisional playoffs, beating the Seattle-Portland Cascades in the quarterfinals (Chris exacting revenge against Betty Stove) and the San Diego Friars in the semifinals (Chris dominating Kerry Reid).
But in the finals the Racquets are beaten by defending champs New York, with Virginia Wade continuing a string of Team Tennis success against Chris (the talent-heavy Apples team has both Wade and Billie Jean King.)
Chris again takes the Female MVP Award but Martina Navratilova (of the Lobsers) ekes out the race for Female scoring leader by a slight total-games-won differential.
